Senior citizens show off their skills on the football field

Every alternate day, they gather at the corner of the field – pulling up their socks, fastening the laces and gazing towards the pitch. Plotting the passes and moves silently, they stretch and warm up. And before long, they are ready to play the beautiful game. “After all, we’re all above 60, and some of us have delicate bones and muscles. So we can’t take a chance,” says Hilário Fernandes, president of the Senior Citizens FC (North) Goa. Hilário, who’s 72, is joined by other members of the club, all 26 of whom are senior citizens, but have the flair for life and the sport that can match any 20-something’s enthusiasm. Though most of them have played professionally for various clubs, these veterans are not only ex-footballers. There are government servants, cops, bankers, media people, seamen and expats, but they come together on one field, carrying no differences or hold-ups.
